Decide What You Will Sell

Next, it's time to determine what handmade products you'll offer. Consider your passions, skills, and what people are asking for. Research trends and niches that align with your interests, ensuring there is a market for your products. It's essential to strike a balance between your creativity, what you can reasonable make on a large scale, and what your perfect customer is looking for.

Build Your Brand

Establishing a strong brand identity is crucial for attracting customers and differentiating yourself from other makers who serve your niche. Start by giving your business a name that reflects what you'll make, and/or who it's for. (Remember, in business, it's always about what your customer wants to hear, not what you want to say ;) ) Decide on your brand voice, whether it's serious, funny, irreverent, professional, or friendly. This voice will shape your communication style.

To convey your brand choose colors and fonts that align with it. Opt for a consistent color palette and fonts that reflect your brand's personality. Additionally, create a memorable but simple logo that speaks to what you'll sell and who it's for, or reach out to a digital artist who can create one for you.

Build Your Website

Creating an engaging and user-friendly website is vital for your online business. Consider using an e-commerce platform like Shopify to get up and running right away. If you need help with this, check out my DIY Shopify Starter Guide.  Build a clean and intuitive website that aligns with your brand's aesthetic, making it easy for visitors to navigate and make purchases. Remember, only about 1% of the people who visit your website will make a purchase and most people will need to visit your site multiple times before their ready to buy.  It's a good idea to build out a way for people to leave their contact info (including an incentive for them to do so) so you can start building a relationship with them until they feel comfortable shopping on your new site.
